ON BACKGROUND

Swarner Communications is the dba for The Ranger Publishing Co., Inc, established in Lakewood, Washington, and in business since 1951.

The company was started in 1951 by Merrit Benson, a University of Washington professor in the School of Communications.  He entered into an agreement with the United States Army to provide a newspaper at Fort Lewis, Washington, known then and still today as The Fort Lewis Ranger newspaper.  Benson promised to provide the Ranger free of charge to the post in return for the ability to sell advertising and retain the profits.  It was the start of the Civilian Enterprise program which still exists on several military bases across the country.
