Everyday is a tough day for the spouses of deployed service members from Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base, but Valentine's Day literally takes the cake.
With nearly 18,000 troops deployed, half of those married, that's a lot of wives (and husbands) missing their hunnies on a day that's supposed to bring couples together. Instead, our military couples are separated by sea and sand.
To help ease the blow, The Fort Lewis Ranger and NW Airlifter will host a spouses' party on Valentine's Day at St. Martin's University in Lacey. From 2 p.m. to 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 14, the papers will provide a fashion show, entertainment, spa services, make-overs, food, games and more at no cost to the participants.
"We want to help them through this difficult day by showering a Las Vegas theme party on them," said Ken Swarner, publisher of the Ranger and Airlifter. "It will be all about good food, fashion, luxury and glitz."
The event will also include a place for the male spouses.
"We will not forget the guys," Swarner added. "We plan to have an all-guy area with events and activities they'll enjoy.
While more details are to follow, Swarner said partners are still appreciated. Any business or organization that would like to help make this a special day for the spouses should call him at 253.584.1212.
